Surah Al-Balad

The General Characteristics of Surah Al-Balad
The Surah
A Meccan Surah
Its Order in the Quran
It is the ninetieth surah in the order of the Quran
Number of Verses
Twenty Verses
It begins with an oath
“I swear by this city,” (Quran 90:1), where God swears by Mecca to emphasize its greatness and the greatness of its inhabitants. It also includes praise for Mecca, the Prophet's station there, and the blessings bestowed upon it and its people. Furthermore, it mentions the Prophet Muhammad's ancestors who were among its inhabitants, including prophets. Surah Al-Balad condemns the behavior of the polytheists, their denial of the Resurrection, their excessive boasting, and their neglect of gratitude for the blessings of their senses, failing to show appreciation through charitable giving. It also addresses their shortcomings in the qualities and ethics of faith. Finally, it contains a warning to the disbelievers and glad tidings for the believers.
Other names of the surah
It is called “Surat al-Balad” in the Qur’an and in books of exegesis.
It is also called Surah Al-Aqaba
It is called "Surah La Uqsim" in its translation from Sahih Al-Bukhari, due to its great importance, because God Almighty has honored Mecca by making it the direction of prayer for Muslims, which is the Kaaba.
The Beginning of the Interpretation
God Almighty said
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
I swear by this city (1)
God swears by this sacred city, which is Mecca, and you, O Prophet, reside in this sacred city. He also swears by the father of humanity, Adam, peace be upon him, and his descendants. We have created humankind in hardship and toil, enduring the trials of this world.
An Overview of the Verse
God Almighty swears by Mecca, may God honor its soil, because it contains the Greatest House of God (the Sacred Mosque). The houses of God on Earth are mosques, so what about the greatest house that God Almighty loves—the Sacred Mosque? We previously discussed whether Mecca is the center of the world on the international map. After some diligent research, we found that it is not exactly the center of the world, but it is the closest point to the center. You know that everything has an axis around which everything revolves. Even the fruit you eat, its center—its "center"—is the sweetest part. It is the best of things, the middle ground, you won't find the center of the fruit salty, sour, or anything else; it is the best part, even if the edges are not as ripe. From this perspective, we see that Mecca is the closest to the center, and this is God's will for His creation: that His House be in this place. We know from the purified Sunnah that the Inhabited House in Paradise is directly above the Kaaba. That is why you find birds drawn to it as if it were a magnet around the Kaaba. Most importantly, I will provide you with some links about the importance of large crowds in a particular place—as happens in the Grand Mosque in Mecca for performing Umrah and prayers—and the significant benefits that international studies have shown regarding such mass gatherings. I will also include another link with a detailed description of the interior and exterior of the Grand Mosque, complete with pictures. And here is a point to consider: God Almighty only swears by what is precious, and He swears by Mecca. We are accustomed to God Almighty not swearing by what is precious. And that's the end of it, but it's always beneficial for us as Muslims, like the oath by the night and the dawn, and other things whose benefits we have found. So, does Mecca have an impact on Muslims? Is it solely due to the supplication of our Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) (So make hearts among the people incline toward them... [Quran 3:14]), or is it that Mecca's central location near the center of the world makes it a global attraction? God knows best where He places His message, but logic compels us to wonder at God's choice of a remote area that lacked the water of Zamzam, and then God created the means for it to become populated by its inhabitants and by people from all over the world, whose hearts yearn to visit the Sacred House of God. God distinguished Egypt by mentioning it twice in the Quran and linking it to the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Sacred Mosque in Surah At-Tin. Egypt at the time of the revelation of the Prophet Muhammad's message possessed a civilization known as the Egyptian civilization. Therefore, God's choice of Mecca and not Egypt, for example, certainly has great merit, and this is within the limits of... Our limited thinking is evident; scientists understand aspects of cosmology that we don't. I'll leave you with the links; please don't miss out on browsing them.

And you are free in this city (2)
(And you are free) meaning it is permissible, (in this city) you can do in it as you wish, killing and taking captives. You are not subject to the same sins as the people there. God Almighty made Mecca permissible for His Prophet - peace and blessings be upon him - on the day of the conquest, so that he fought and killed and ordered the killing of Ibn Khatal, who was clinging to the curtains of the Kaaba, and Muqays ibn Subabah and others. He made the blood of some people permissible, and the blood of others forbidden. He said: Whoever enters the house of Abu Sufyan is safe. Then he said: God made Mecca sacred on the day He created the heavens and the earth, and it was not made permissible for anyone before me nor will it be made permissible for anyone after me. It was only made permissible for me for a short time during the day, so it is forbidden by God’s prohibition until the Day of Resurrection. When God Almighty swore by Mecca, this indicated its great importance along with its sanctity. He promised His Prophet - peace and blessings be upon him - that He would make it permissible for him until he fought in it, and that He would conquer it at his hand. This is a promise from God - the Exalted and Majestic - that He would make it permissible for him.
And by the father and what he begot (3) We have certainly created man in toil (4)
God swears by this sacred city, which is Mecca, and you, O Prophet, reside in this sacred city. He swears by the father of humanity, Adam, peace be upon him, and by his descendants. We have certainly created man in hardship and toil, enduring the trials of this world. “We have certainly created man,” meaning humankind, “in toil,” enduring the hardships of this world and the trials of the Hereafter.
A look at the verse
God Almighty swore by three oaths, all of which are great and noble, or rather the first two. Our master Adam is the father of humanity, from which come the non-Arabs and the Arabs, the disbelievers, the hypocrites, and the believers, and which includes different colors, languages, sizes, and skin tones from one person to another. If we take one thing from the children of Adam and talk about it, we talk about the fingerprint. Every person in this vast world, on six continents or more, carries a fingerprint of the hand, foot, kidney, liver, eye, ear, etc., completely different from his brother, the son of his mother and father. So what about the differences between continents, countries, cities, and villages within countries? and this is not all, but among us are the civilized and among us are the uncivilized, as God Almighty said, "And We made you into nations and tribes." This is a tremendous creation that began with one by the will of the Great God, and man began to form this enormous humanity with its colors, languages, religions, belief in God or lack of belief. Humanity today reached 8 billion in 2022, according to United Nations estimates. It is expected to reach 9 billion in 2037, and 10 billion in 2060, which is a huge number. God Almighty wants to alert us that all these divisions are only in response to the following division: “He created man in toil and hardship.” Perhaps I hear you saying, “What about kings, the wealthy, and their children? Don’t they get tired?” Who told you that? Even they toil to reach the kingship, even if they inherited it from father to son. They continue to strive and exert themselves so that it does not leave them. Look at yourself, even in the outings you take with your family: you pack a bag, you work at home, you travel by transportation, however comfortable it may be, it is tiring, then you unpack your bag at your hotel, and then you have to pack it again to return. All outings on a trip are nothing but toil upon toil, no matter how happy you are with them.
Does he think that no one has power over him? (5)
Does he think that no one has power over him, and thus become arrogant and boastful about the wealth he has spent on his desires?
A Reflection on the Verse
Consider the wording (Does he think?), as if God Almighty is mocking you. It is a rhetorical question of rebuke. Do you imagine, O human being, no matter how much physical strength, security, psychological power, or protection you possess from those around you, that no one has power over you? This is empty thinking, devoid of substance. God Almighty is the One who bestowed these gifts upon you in the first place, and He is capable of taking away what He has given you were it not for His mercy or His gradual leading astray.
He says, “I have spent wealth in abundance.” (6)
He boasts, “I have spent a great deal of money.” Does he think that in doing this, God Almighty does not see him, nor will He hold him accountable for every little thing?
A Glimpse into the Verse
“Lubdan” refers to something piled one on top of another. We say, “This is a day overcast with clouds.”
So, a person says about himself, “I have spent,” meaning, “I have spent a great deal of money on myself.” Note the word “I have spent”: destruction means annihilation, leaving no trace. As for spending in the way of God, even a small act of charity, which God has prescribed as Zakat or Sunnah charity, there are three reasons for this:
A - To purify wealth from any suspicion of being unlawful. The origin of the wealth is always and forever lawful, but you simply do not know it.
B. Purifying oneself from greed. Greed destroyed the nations before us. Greed is not the same as stinginess. Stinginess means being stingy with yourself or your family, while greed means being stingy with what others spend on others. For example, if you are a stepmother and refuse to let your husband spend on children other than your own, this is greed.
C. In Arabic, Money is called "mal" (Money) precisely because it inclines its owner either towards doing good deeds or towards spending on himself and depriving others.
Does he think that no one sees him? (7)
Does this person who boasts about his spending think that God does not see him?! And that He will not hold him accountable for his wealth: from where he acquired it? And how he spent it?!
A Glimpse into the Verse
Were it not for this noble verse and others like it, the disbelieving West would say: "We are more advanced than the God of the Muslims." They see Muslims in their homes today through various methods and technologies, and even hear what goes on in their minds moment by moment, during actual thought and before speech is uttered, such as MRI, FMRI, V2K, and "The Big Brother is watching you." This is within the limits of our limited knowledge, and what is hidden is even greater. If God Almighty had not included "The Watchful" among His Most Beautiful Names, if He had not said that He sees us everywhere, Muslims would have died of terror from the thought of "The Big Brother is watching you." Because the Muslim knows that he is being watched directly by God Almighty and knows that the angels of preservation record his every deed, great and small, he would at least say to himself, "The West is very advanced, and Islam is outdated and unsuitable for this time." We seek forgiveness from God for this expression. Praise be to God always and forever.
Have We not given him two eyes (8) and a tongue and two lips (9)?
Have We not given him two eyes with which to see, and a tongue and two lips with which to speak, and made clear to him the paths of good and evil? Qatadah said: God's blessings are manifest, reminding you of them so that you may be grateful. And it is narrated in a hadith that God, the Exalted and Glorified, says: O son of Adam, if your tongue tempts you to do what I have forbidden you, I have aided you with two layers of the tongue, so close them. If your sight tempts you to do what I have forbidden you, I have aided you with two layers of the tongue, so close them. If your private parts tempt you to do what I have forbidden you, I have aided you with two layers of the tongue, so close them.

The Scientists Reveal How Our Eyes Reveal Memories Without a Word
What Does Remembering Mean? For most of us, memory is linked to words: recalling a birthday party, describing a vacation, naming a face, or recounting what we had for lunch yesterday. When psychologists and neuroscientists study memory, they typically rely on these verbal accounts. Participants are asked to describe what they saw, repeat lists of things, or share details of past events. But what happens when words fail? How can we study memory in infants who haven't yet learned to speak, in brain injury patients who have lost the ability to communicate, or in those with advanced Alzheimer's whose language skills have faded? For decades, this question has preoccupied researchers. Memory has long been considered something hidden, accessible only through language—until now.
A groundbreaking study led by Professor Yuval Nir and his team at Tel Aviv University and the Sourasky Medical Center in Tel Aviv offers a new possibility: memory can be measured not by words, but by the movement of our eyes.
The research team
led by Dr. Flavio Schmidig, in collaboration with Dr. Daniel Yamin and Dr. Omer Sharon, began with a simple yet profound observation. In our daily lives, memories often come to us spontaneously. We don't always consciously summon them; they appear on their own. A familiar scent reminds us of our childhood. A song on the radio brings back a forgotten love. A sudden sound evokes a scene from years ago.
The eyes are the mirror of memory
The answer came from an unexpected source: gaze. Our eyes are not static windows, but constantly moving, scanning the world and anticipating what will happen next. When we know something is about to happen—because we have seen it before—our eyes tend to move toward the anticipated location before the event occurs. This unconscious anticipation may be the key to unlocking silent memories. With the help of artificial intelligence, a computer can
analyze eye-tracking data for just a few seconds and deduce whether a person has formed a memory. This opens the door to studying memory in previously inaccessible groups: such as infants, individuals with speech impairments, or patients with severe neurodegenerative diseases.
The Memory is written in our eyes
The beauty of this discovery lies in its simplicity. No surgical instruments, no complex procedures—just a camera, video, and the eyes of a person who remembers. In this quiet exchange between gaze and event, memory is revealed.
The Witness
Have you considered the verse: “Did We not give him two eyes?” Glory be to You, my Lord, how great You are, and how magnificent is Your creation! The eye is a moving memory and think about it: you take snapshots throughout your walk on the sea, or on a picnic, or even in a scene of war and destruction. All these snapshots are stored as memory. And I ask you a question: those in famines, may God protect them and us, if there were children and after a year, God forbid, you brought him an apple and asked him what this is, perhaps he could not answer because he was simply too young and at the time of the famine he could not buy it, so its smell and shape do not represent anything to him. And the opposite is true, for the adult, no matter how long it is that he has not eaten it, just smelling its smell will also remind him of the memories of when at least he ate it.
And We guided him to the two paths (10)
That is, the paths of good and evil. We made clear to him guidance from misguidance, and righteousness from error. These abundant blessings require the servant to fulfill God's rights, to thank God for His favors, and not to use them to commit sins. But this man did not do that.
But he has not attempted the steep ascent. (11) And what will make you know what the steep ascent is? (12) It is the freeing of a slave. (13) Or feeding on a day of severe hunger. (14)
He is required to overcome the obstacle that separates him from Paradise, and he must cross it and pass over it. It is the freeing of a believing slave from the bondage of slavery, or feeding on a day of severe famine an orphan from among his relatives, thus combining the virtue of charity and maintaining kinship ties, or a destitute person who has nothing.
A glimpse into the verse
The number of Muslim slaves exceeded 10 million people, most of whom were women and children. The largest exporter of slaves was Mauritania, a Muslim country, then it declined in favor of India. Today, Asia is the largest exporter of slaves. You can find some information about them in [link/reference]. This category's path
